Understanding Systems in Motion

Some people are satisfied knowing that something works. I have always wanted to understand why.

That curiosity is how I have spent my career: looking under the hood, watching how organizations behave, and following questions that do not yet have obvious answers. The important things are usually happening just beneath the surface, in the space between how a system is supposed to work and how it really does.

Over time, that instinct carried me through biotechnology, engineering software, global supply chains, acquisitions, artificial intelligence, conservation, and advisory work. The settings changed. The habit of trying to see the whole system, and the people inside it, did not.

Listening at Promega

The view from the top is rarely the whole picture.

At Promega I spent years moving between headquarters and the international markets the company was trying to serve. I was curious about the gap between what we believed about our customers and what was actually true for them, so I kept traveling far enough into those markets to find out.

The work that taught me the most was not strategy in the abstract. It was listening closely, sitting with the people closest to the work, and asking questions that did not have tidy answers. The official story and the lived reality were rarely the same, and the distance between them was where the real understanding lived.

What stayed with me was less a result than a lesson: organizations drift away from their own operational reality more easily than anyone expects. The most meaningful opportunities to learn, and to grow, were almost never visible from the top alone.

Technology, talent, and continuity through change

Here the questions were about people as much as engineering. I worked alongside a highly specialized engineering software company as it built technical capability, held talent that took years to develop and could not easily be replaced, and moved through a period of significant transition. The technology mattered, but it was the people who carried it.

A small group of deeply skilled people holds knowledge that no balance sheet captures, and change can quietly put that knowledge at risk. The lesson stayed with me: healthy organizations work hard to preserve their capability and their expertise through transition, not despite it.

Consequential decisions under uncertainty

I helped leadership think through a growth problem that was never really about technology. The capability existed. What limited the company was its ability to evaluate the world's feedstock supply at a scale and pace its own team could not sustain. The work was to build a process that could travel further than we could. The information was never complete. It rarely is when the decisions matter most.

Supply chains are often described in the language of logistics and cost. What this work taught me is that they are human systems, stretched across geographies and lives. A major strategic decision about sourcing reaches into communities and into the people who do the work. Those choices land on real people, in real places, and holding that awareness changes how you decide.

Where many systems move at once.

Far Bank is the clearest picture of how I work now. Supply chains, engineering, talent, stewardship, artificial intelligence capability, and organizational culture were not separate problems. They were a single set of systems, moving at once.

A change in any one of them moved the others. Building AI capability pulled on talent. Strengthening the supply chain touched stewardship. Caring for culture shaped how customers experienced the company. You could not pull on one thing and pretend the rest would hold still.

That is the bridge between everything I learned earlier and the work today. The people at Far Bank are not resistant to change because they don't care. They are resistant because they care deeply, and they have been there long enough to have seen what careless change costs. The point was never a tidy success story. It was learning to move carefully inside something worth protecting.
